Old Town, Nice, France

Old Town in Nice is filled with interesting sidestreets and alleyways which take on a unique charm and atmosphere at dusk.  This photograph was taken in what is known as the 'blue hour'; that hour after the sun sets where there is still a residual blue light in the sky, which can contrast beautifully with the orange glow of flourescent lights.  A colloquial French saying dictates that the blue hour is a time of confusion and mystery, since it is impossible to determine whether it is really night or day.

The Shard, London

The Shard, London

At the time of writing, the Shard in London is the tallest building in Europe.  It is an impressive structure of steel and glass befitting of its name which is visible all across the city.  I like this view because it contrasts here with the more traditional architecture which still survives all around it.

Monteverde Cloud Forest, Costa Rica

The cloud forests of Monteverde in Costa Rica are a stunning example of ancient, undisturbed woodland.  The area is protected and has many unique species which are not found anywhere else in the country.  Here, the tree canopy can be seen to vanish into the mist and cloud which is almost omnipresent.

Southwark Cathedral, London

The present Southwark Cathedral retains the same Gothic structure built between 1220 and 1420, though the nave is a late 19th century reconstruction.  It stands in stark contrast to the modern architecture rising all around it.

Grasmere lake and the surrounding countryside and villages are visible here from the northern slopes of a nearby hill.  This was a murky day but I found that the photograph worked much better when converted to black and white.  These waters eventually end up in Lake Windermere, which is the largest natural lake in England, and a major attraction and landmark for the entire area.

The river Rothay slips quietly by a cottage in the English countryside.  A long exposure here has helped to smooth the water, and I like the contrast between the disturbed water on the left, and the still water on the right.

Victoria Memorial, London, England

The Victoria memorial was built in tribute to queen Victoria, and was completed in 1924.  It lies at the top of the Mall, outside Buckingham palace.  It is an impressive structure of marble and gilt bronze, and I think it also looks well in black and white.

This is another photograph of the Victoria memorial in London, but this time in colour to show the contrast between the gilt bronze of the statue and the blue sky.  I framed this photograph for symmetry and I find that the distortion caused by the lens actually improves the picture.

A corner restaurant in Nice, France, spills orange light into the street during blue hour.  Nice is a city of nightlife, and restaurants and shops like these keep going into the small hours, which is part of its charm.

This street in Nice, France, was being lit by a solitary streetlight at dusk, which was casting interesting light into the scene.  You get the feeling that these streets in the Old Town might have looked much like this for almost a hundred years.

Èze, France

Èze is an incredible village overlooking the Meditarranean from a height of 427 metres.  It is as quentessential an old French village as you can imagine, despite its extreme location.  An Egyptian cross inside the church suggests the roots of the ancient town, when the Phoenecians erected a temple to the goddess Isis.

The ochre paint that covers almost every wall in Nice's Old Town gives a unique atmosphere to these side streets.  In many places it is peeling and faded from the sun, but it doesn't seem to diminish the charm.  I liked the interplay between the lines in this picture.
